All-New Hyundai Staria awarded ANCAP 5 star safety rating

Last week the all-new Hyundai Staria and Staria-Load was awarded the maximum 5 star safety rating by ANCAP, Australasia’s independent voice on vehicle safety.
About ANCAP Satety Ratings
Vehicles are awarded an ANCAP safety rating between 0 and 5 stars which indicate the level of safety they provide in the event of a crash. The rating also takes into account the vehicles ability to avoid or minimise the effects of a crash. To achieve the maximum 5 star safety rating, the vehicle must perform to the highest standards in all tests and contain advanced safety assist technologies. The assessment criteria has become more stringent with each rating year, holding vehicles to a consistently higher standard.
As ANCAP is an independent vehicle safety authority they play a vital role in informing customers of the differences in safety performance of new vehicles entering the fleet. The authority also advocates for improved vehicle safety design and specification through public education campaigns, advocacy activities and engagement with governments, corporate fleets, the media and consumers.
Working within the Safe System principles, this approach used by ANCAP recognises that people do make mistakes and have physical limits on the amount of force our bodies can take. The principals target actions to achieve safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles and safe people working together to achieve this aim.
Staria ANCAP Safety Performance
The eight seater Hyundai Staria scored well across the board in all areas of performance, with full points awarded in the side impact test for both adult and child occupants, and for the driver in both the full width frontal and mobile progressive deformable barrier (MPDB) tests.
The Staria boasts a comprehensive set of safety features, offering head and chest-protecting side airbags, a centre airbag, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), and a lane support system (LSS) as standard.
The Staria performed well in most of ANCAP’s active safety tests, showing good performance in tests of the AEB car-to-car system, with collisions avoided or mitigated in most scenarios, though it does not respond to vehicles or pedestrians when turning (junction assist) or reversing (backover). Similarly, the Lane Keep Assist and Emergency Lane Keeping systems showed good capability across a range of scenarios. The 5 star rating for the Staria also applies to the Staria-Load Van, which is the first commercial van to score a 5 star safety rating under ANCAP’s 2020-2022 protocols which is the most stringent to date.

The 5 star safety ratings apply to all variants of the Staria people mover, and automatic Staria-Load van variants.
