Ken and Sue have completed 5 campervan/motorhome acquisitions in the last 43 years. So when they saw the luxury fittings of the reliable Mercedes Sprinter 316, they knew their best Compact Motorhome was yet to come.
Joel at Tynan Mercedes let Ken loose with the tape measure on a few Sprinter models, and Ken confirmed he could fit a luxury fit out with toilet/shower and full-set containment in a mid-wheelbase Sprinter.
Coincidentaly, Campervans Australia in Albion park were already building the same layout he had designed, commonly fitting out ex-ambulance Sprinters – they call it their “Safari Edition”. This edition is only available on a Sprinter mid-wheelbase with right hand additional sliding door.
Chris, Ben and Paul at Campervans Australia spent a month on the fit out. The work includes electrical, gas, and cabinet fitting trades. This job is engineer-certified and includes a new fibreglass roof that is specially tailored for the rooftop appliances and internal headroom.
The van has air conditioning, a microwave when on 240v connection, a stove, sink, fridge, TV/DVD, exhaust fan, hot water, cassette toilet and shower – all functional on the gas or 12V systems. The Safari includes numerous cupboards and storage spaces, tables (inside and outside), a wind-out awning, grey water storage tank, solar panels and two ‘house’ batteries.
As impressive as this Safari Edition is for luxury camping and other adventures, it only fits two passengers. Families would need a longer wheelbase fit out, which can affect parking options.
Ken says the Safari Edition Mercedes Sprinter has been their most trouble free of all their acquisitions, totalling the motorhome cost at approximately $109,000. Ken and Sue estimate they saved $10,000 to $15,000 and got the combination of vehicle and conversion that matched their well-considered lifestyle needs.
