RAMs 5000th locally produced truck has been completed Melbourne, marking a significant milestone for RAM Trucks Australia.
RAM has added the Granite Crystal grey 1500 V8 Hemi Laramie to the vast range of RAM trucks in the Australian market. Their superior capacities and capabilities “eats other Utes for breakfast”, as RAM says.
RAM offers customers a light-duty 1500 and heavy-duty 3500 and 2500 American trucks to fit the needs of the Australian market. With a towing capacity from 3.5 tonnes and up to 6.9 tonnes. The RAM Trucks did exceptionally well in the Australian market in 2019, which is up by 341.4% YTD.
Executive Chairman of the Ateco Group came up with the idea to covert the left-hand drive RAM trucks to right-handed drive at the bespoke Melbourne Manufacturing Facility (MMF). “This is truly an Australian automotive success story,” he stated.
“2019 saw RAM sales just shy of 3,000 units in Australia and New Zealand. The previous year we sold 767 and just 449 in 2017. Most pleasing of all, however, is the boost to the local automotive manufacturing sector. RAM now employs over 250 people directly, and many more indirectly via our local supplier agreements.”
With around 50,000 RAMs sold per month in the US, RAM was looking to expand into a new area. Crichton felt that Australia could manufacture world-class products, despite the recent closures of other local manufacturing facilities, and he was right.
When RAM examined the conversion industry in 2013, they discovered that 46 different RAM convertors all used different standers, qualities and expenses. As a result, RAM decided that their brand was not being well represented and that their customers were not receiving the best quality service.
RAM Trucks decided that with the Ateco Group, that they were ready to enter the market. They conducted a worldwide search of all the potential remanufacturing partners and narrowed them down to four prospects. The Walkinshaw Group recived the contract in 2015.
The Ateco Group have now invested over $100million in tools, equipment, inventory, and stock to allow for product development, quality and conformity with overseas requirements of RAM Trucks International, the strict ADR regulations, and high consumer expectations.
Converting began on the left-hand drive heavy duty 2500 and 3500 models into the right-hand drive vehicles in late 2015. These went on sale in early 2016, and the 1500 light-duty model came on stream in July 2018.
Each nameplate undergoes a thorough re-engineering process which designs and produces right-hand drive trucks for Australia and New Zealand. This includes 400 locally sourced remanufacture parts.
From June 2018, RAM Trucks Australia was the only 24-hour vehicle manufacturing facility in Australia. It is also the world’s only factory-authorised RHD manufacturerof RAM Trucks.
RAM Trucks Australia is also a valuable source of employment in automotive engineering, design and production excellence for both RAM Trucks Australia and New Zealand, and the Australian component companies that keep the factory supplied with Australian made parts.
“The investment is significant and ongoing,” says David Smitherman, RAM Trucks Australia Special Advisor.
“We have a fantastically engaged dealer network in both Australia and New Zealand, and we have exciting plans for 2020 and beyond to continue building the brand, product portfolio and network.”
Every RAM is backed by a three year/100,000km warranty with Roadside Assistance, and requires a service every 12 months or 12,000km.
