Shopping for a used small car can be nerve wrecking – how do you know which car best suits your needs? One model that ticks a lot of boxes is the fourth-generation Subaru Impreza from 2012-2016, that comes with a naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine and standard all-wheel drive.

In sedan or hatch form and in 2.0i, 2.0i-L or 2.0i-S grades, the Impreza’s sole 110kW engine improved on the predecessor’s fuel economy at the expense of performance. The gearbox options were a six-speed manual or, replacing the venerable four-speed auto, a constantly variable transmission.

The hatchback body was the more popular, as was the CVT, and the base 2.0i (with steel wheels) was the strongest seller. If you can stretch to a higher grade when preloved shopping you’ll score a pretty desirable kit.

All came with auto stop-start, paddle-shifters for the CVT, cruise control, climate control, multi-function display, Bluetooth and USB connection.

Find a 2.0i-L and you add reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, 16-inch alloys, leather steering wheel and fog lights. The sportiness arrived in the 2.0i-S with chrome body garnishes, upgraded upholstery, alloy pedals and 17-inch wheels.

Positives were the Impreza’s five-star safety rating, its ease and comfort to drive and the cabin’s quality feel. Less attractive was the lack of any real urge from the engine, while the drive experience could be a tad flat with the sometimes whiny CVT auto gearbox.
