Official Confirmation: Hybrid Crosstrek Is Coming to Australia

During the national media launch for the new Forester, Subaru Australia General Manager Scott Lawrence confirmed that the Strong Hybrid technology is being prepared for the Crosstrek SUV. While specific timing wasn’t disclosed, Lawrence hinted at “some exciting news” later this year, reassuring customers that Subaru is working closely with Subaru Corporation in Japan to bring the next-gen hybrid to our shores.

“Our focus has been on bringing it out on Forester first, but all I can say is watch this space,” said Lawrence.

What Is the Subaru ‘Strong Hybrid’ System?

The Crosstrek Strong Hybrid is expected to accelerate from 0–100km/h in under 9 seconds, a notable figure for a small SUV with an emphasis on fuel economy. While official fuel efficiency data has yet to be released, the larger Subaru Forester Hybrid using the same technology delivers 6.2L/100km, suggesting the Crosstrek may achieve an even better figure.

Subaru also claims a 20% improvement in efficiency compared to outgoing systems, while a larger 63-litre fuel tank extends range beyond 1000km on a single tank and charge—ideal for longer trips across Australia.
