Australian motorists are now filling up with cleaner petrol, bringing our fuel standards in line with much of the developed world – and the best part? It comes at little to no noticeable cost at the pump.

From 15 December 2025, all petrol sold in Australia must meet significantly lower sulphur limits, a long-awaited change that benefits both the environment and modern vehicles. At Tynan Motors, we’re breaking down what this means for your car, your fuel bill, and anyone considering a new or near-new vehicle.

Australia’s Petrol Standards Have Finally Caught Up

Fuel stations nationwide are now required to sell petrol containing no more than 10 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur. This is a major reduction from previous limits:

    • 91-octane unleaded: down from 150ppm
    • 95-octane premium: down from 50ppm
    • 98-octane premium: down from 50ppm

These new standards now match countries such as Europe, the United States, New Zealand and China, improving air quality and reducing harmful vehicle emissions across Australia.

Sulphur is a natural component of crude oil, but when burned it contributes to pollution. Lower sulphur petrol allows engines to run cleaner and helps modern emissions systems operate as designed.

Will Cleaner Petrol Affect Your Car?

The short answer: no changes required.

The cleaner fuel is fully compatible with all existing petrol vehicles on Australian roads. In fact, many cars may actually run slightly cleaner and more efficiently as a result.

There’s no need to switch fuel types or modify your driving habits – the cleaner petrol is already flowing from the same bowsers you use every day.

    Cleaner Fuel Supports New-Generation Vehicles

The timing of the fuel upgrade isn’t accidental. It coincides with the rollout of Euro 6d emissions standards for new vehicles sold in Australia.

These tougher standards require engines to produce fewer harmful emissions and, in many cases, rely on advanced technologies such as:

    • Petrol Particulate Filters (PPFs)
    • More precise fuel injection systems
    • Improved exhaust after-treatment systems

Cleaner, low-sulphur fuel is essential for protecting these components. Without it, systems like PPFs can suffer costly damage over time.

This is particularly good news for buyers considering new European vehicles or the latest petrol models available at Tynan Motors.

    Will Petrol Prices Go Up?

According to Federal Government forecasts, the cleaner fuel standards may increase petrol prices by:

    • 0.6 to 1.0 cents per litre due to lower sulphur content
    • An additional 0.9 cents per litre for 95-octane petrol due to stricter aromatic hydrocarbon limits

In real-world terms, this is minimal.

For example, a petrol car using 95-octane fuel, consuming 8.0L/100km, and driving 15,000km per year would cost around $22.80 extra per year – an amount most motorists are unlikely to notice due to normal fuel price cycles.

Industry experts also note that fuel price fluctuations of 30–40 cents per litre are already common in major cities, easily overshadowing the small cost of cleaner petrol.
