Kia Australia has made a bold move by positioning its first hybrid Carnival people-mover at the premium end of the market. This flagship eight-seater follows in the footsteps of Kia’s petrol-electric variants of the Sorento large SUV, offering a top-tier hybrid option that blends luxury with advanced hybrid technology.

Premium Pricing for a Premium Hybrid

The new GT-Line Hybrid version of the facelifted Carnival is priced at $76,210 before on-road costs. This makes it $5530 more expensive than the equivalent V6 petrol model and $3300 more than the diesel GT-Line grade. Initially, the hybrid Carnival will be available only in the flagship GT-Line spec. However, Kia’s Australian division has expressed interest in expanding the petrol-electric Carnival range to include more affordable trim levels in the future.

Advanced Powertrain and Impressive Specs

The hybrid model is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 132kW and 265Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. What sets the Carnival hybrid apart from other models like the Sorento and Sportage is its more powerful 54kW/304Nm electric motor integrated into the transmission. The combined maximum power output is an impressive 180kW and 366Nm.

For comparison, the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, which is fitted to 90 per cent of Carnivals sold in Australia, offers 148kW and 440Nm. Meanwhile, the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine delivers 216kW and 355Nm. Despite these robust figures, the hybrid’s real strength lies in its exceptional fuel efficiency.

Fuel Efficiency and Emissions

One of the standout features of the hybrid Carnival is its fuel consumption. According to Kia, the hybrid achieves a combined cycle fuel return of 5.8 litres per 100km. For urban driving, the efficiency improves significantly, with a claimed consumption of just 4.2L/100km, thanks to the powertrain’s frequent use of the battery pack and electric motor in stop-start conditions.

In terms of emissions, the hybrid Carnival emits 132g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle, and just 98g/km for urban driving. These figures highlight the environmental benefits of opting for the hybrid model, making it an attractive choice for eco-conscious buyers.
