Mahindra Scorpio Set to Gain Vital Safety Upgrades for Australia
The rugged Mahindra Scorpio, a favourite among off-road SUV enthusiasts, is gearing up for a major safety overhaul in response to new Australian regulations and feedback from the market.
Safety Boost for 2026 Mahindra Scorpio
Following its zero-star ANCAP safety rating in 2023, Mahindra is taking strong steps to bring the Scorpio up to modern safety standards. The company has officially confirmed that autonomous emergency braking (AEB) – a now-mandated safety feature in Australia – will be added to the Scorpio later in 2025. This upgrade will enable Mahindra to resume imports of the popular SUV, which were paused after AEB became compulsory from 1 March 2025.
Mahindra’s spokesperson reaffirmed their commitment to safety:
“Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd is committed to adhering to all regulatory standards. We plan to introduce Scorpio with AEB in Australia by the end of this year.”
AEB in the Scorpio will feature detection for other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists – a critical step forward from the current model, which lacks any crash-avoidance systems. In addition to the AEB upgrade, Mahindra's Indian-spec Scorpio-N includes a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as:
- Lane-keep assist
- Lane departure warning
- Traffic sign recognition
- Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go
- Automatic high beam
- Leading vehicle departure alert
These safety technologies are available on the Z8L ADAS variant in India and may be introduced to the Australian market in future updates.
More Features, More Comfort
Beyond safety, Mahindra is also elevating the Scorpio's comfort and tech features. Indian models have received ventilated front seats, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a sleek gloss-black centre console – upgrades that may make their way to Australia soon.
In a recent change, the flagship Scorpio Z8L variant in Australia now comes with a seven-seat layout, replacing the six-seat configuration with captain's chairs. The base Z8 retains its six-seat format.
Pricing and Availability
Current pricing for the Mahindra Scorpio in Australia ranges from $41,990 to $46,990 drive-away. While the AEB-equipped model isn’t expected until later this year, Mahindra has confirmed it holds adequate stock of existing six- and seven-seat Scorpios that were approved for sale before the March 2025 regulation change.
