NSW Government Supercharges EV Future with $16.1M Fast Charger Investment
In a major boost for electric vehicle (EV) drivers, the NSW Government has announced a further $16.1 million investment in EV fast chargers across the state. This initiative will add nearly 250 new electric vehicle charging stations, strategically placed to eliminate “range anxiety” and support the increasing number of EVs on New South Wales roads.
With this move, NSW EV infrastructure takes a big step forward—helping the state meet its ambitious goal of 52% EV sales by 2030–31.
Ultra-Fast Charging: 10 to 80% in Just 15 Minutes
Each of the new EV fast charging stations will offer charging speeds of up to 350kW, capable of bringing an EV’s battery from 10 to 80% in just 10 to 15 minutes. This is a game-changer for commuters, families, and regional drivers alike, as it drastically reduces charging time and increases convenience.
Importantly, the chargers will also feature:
- Pull-through bays for vehicles towing caravans or boats
- Accessible design to support people with disabilities
Private Sector Support for a Greener Future
The $16.1 million public investment is backed by approximately $25 million in private funding from major players in the energy and mobility space, including:
- BP
- Tesla
- Energy Australia
- Plus ES
- NRMA
This public-private partnership highlights a collective commitment to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in NSW.
Key Suburbs Receiving New EV Charging Stations
A total of 38 suburbs and towns will benefit from this rollout. Among them are metropolitan hubs, regional centres, and travel corridors, ensuring widespread coverage. These include:
Sydney, Parramatta, Taren Point, Mascot, Dubbo, Gladesville, Singleton, Jindabyne, Gymea, Strathfield, Smithfield, Mudgee, and more.
This ensures that both urban and regional NSW residents can enjoy reliable and fast EV charging close to home or on the go.
A Broader NSW EV Charging Strategy
This initiative is just one component of the NSW Government’s comprehensive electric vehicle strategy. Additional investments include:
- $10M for kerbside EV chargers in urban areas
- $10M for retrofitting EV infrastructure in apartment buildings
- $20M for EV destination charging grants, particularly targeting tourism regions
- $149M in fast-charging grants to support ultra-fast chargers at 100km intervals on highways and every 5km in metro areas
Currently, NSW has over 3,200 public EV chargers operational, with this number set to grow significantly over the next few years.
Supporting EV Uptake in NSW
According to Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe, the strategy is about removing obstacles that hold back EV adoption:
“These charging stations will make it easier to charge EVs away from home, while also helping to reduce climate pollution.”
With greater charger availability, faster charging times, and widespread access, the new investment supports a future where electric vehicles are mainstream across NSW—from city streets to remote highways.
