NSW Introduces Built-In EV Labels on Number Plates
In an Australian-first, New South Wales will now manufacture number plates with built-in safety labels for electric, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles – removing the need for the adhesive stickers that were previously applied by dealerships or customers.
What’s Changing?
Until now, EV, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles in NSW were fitted with adhesive safety labels:
- A blue triangle for electric and hybrid vehicles.
- A yellow pentagon for hydrogen vehicles.
These stickers were placed on number plates during registration, often at the dealership. Going forward, the safety labels will be stamped directly into the plate during the manufacturing process – just like the letters and numbers.
This makes the identifiers more durable, longer-lasting, and easier to recognise.
Why It Matters
The new design is more than just cosmetic – it’s about safety.
Emergency services can now more quickly identify vehicles powered by alternative fuels during an accident or fire. This is critical for first responders, as EVs and hybrids contain high-voltage systems that require specialised handling.
According to Transport for NSW, there are already over 367,000 electric and hybrid vehicles registered in NSW, and that number continues to rise rapidly. With demand for EVs increasing, clear identifiers make the roads safer for everyone.
What Drivers Need to Know
- New plates with integrated EV labels will now be issued with general registrations in NSW.
- Dealerships can order the updated plates for new vehicles across a range of plate types (standard, slimline, conditional registrations, etc.).
- Custom plates won’t include the EV label by default, but customers will be able to request it when ordering.
- If you transfer a labelled plate to a non-EV, you’ll need to order a new set without the identifier.
A Safer Future for EV Drivers
Fire and Rescue NSW has welcomed the change, noting that visible, permanent identifiers are a critical focal point in emergency situations – helping crews avoid high-voltage areas and implement safe rescue and fire strategies.
For drivers, the integrated design means less maintenance, no risk of stickers peeling or fading, and guaranteed compliance.
