Suzuki Across: Could Toyota RAV4’s Next-Gen Twin Come to Australia?
The Toyota RAV4 is one of Australia’s most popular SUVs – and its plug-in hybrid twin, the Suzuki Across, could be a game-changer if it ever arrives on local roads.
Currently available in Europe and the UK, the Across is essentially a Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid with unique Suzuki styling. If introduced here, it would become Suzuki’s largest SUV in Australia – and the brand’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
At Tynan Suzuki Kirrawee, we’re following the conversation closely. Here’s what we know so far.
What is the Suzuki Across?
The Suzuki Across combines Toyota’s proven plug-in hybrid technology with Suzuki’s design language, offering:
- 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine
- 18.1kWh battery pack
- Up to 74km of electric-only driving range
- 55-litre fuel tank for long-distance trips
This dual power setup allows drivers to enjoy EV driving in the city while keeping petrol power in reserve for longer journeys – making it ideal for families who want lower running costs without the range anxiety of a fully electric car.
Why Isn’t It in Australia Yet?
Suzuki Australia’s General Manager, Michael Pachota, recently addressed the question of whether the Across will join the local line-up:
“It’s a larger car than anything we have in our product portfolio in Australia, so obviously there would be demand for another Suzuki in a larger segment. And there is quite a high demand for that segment in Australia itself.”
However, he also explained the origins of the model:
“The whole purpose of the introduction of that car into the European market was based upon the conditions of the emissions structure and control of the European market at the time. There was a joint decision between Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation at the time to join forces and do that.”
When asked if it could come here, Pachota added:
“I can’t say it’s not part of the plan, but at the same time, I haven’t been advised of anything from Suzuki Motor Corporation to say that it will be part of our plan in Australia. With that said, it would be a great car for us. But it doesn’t look like we’re getting it any time soon.”
What It Could Mean for Tynan Suzuki Drivers
If the Suzuki Across were to arrive, it would give local buyers a larger SUV alternative to the Vitara and S-Cross, while also introducing plug-in hybrid efficiency to the Suzuki range.
At Tynan Suzuki Kirrawee, we recognise the growing demand for fuel-efficient, eco-conscious SUVs in the Sutherland Shire and beyond. While the Across isn’t confirmed, the interest and market demand are undeniable.
For now, the Suzuki Across remains a wishlist model for Australia. But with increasing interest in plug-in hybrids and tightening emissions standards, it may only be a matter of time.
Stay tuned. We’ll keep you updated if the Suzuki Across makes its way to Australia.
